El Imaginario de Los Pleneros de la 21

A photographic exhibit showcasing the visual narratives of New York’s Bomba and Plena Ambassadors to the World.
June 9 - July 29, 2023

From notable photographers, to candid community captures, to distinguished graphic and visual artists, Los Pleneros de la 21’s performances, programs, musicians, and the experiences they have crafted for four decades, have been a source of inspiration for many culture bearers, Bomba and Plena practitioners, and the Puerto Rican community in New York City

As the group celebrates its 40th anniversary milestone, they have put together a specially curated selection of photographs to offer a compelling snapshot of the hundreds, if not thousands of stories, performances and experiences that embody a collective memory of several generations of Bomba and Plena visionaries and musicians. Deeply rooted in the East Harlem neighborhood (El Barrio) since its inception, the exhibit also presents a testament of the profound cultural practice that has been pioneered by Puerto Ricans in the community for decades.

Free admission | The exhibit will be open Tuesdays - Saturdays, from 12pm - 5pm. Walk-ins always welcomed!

Funding for this program has been made possible by support from the New York state Council on the Arts, NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, Creatives Rebuild NY, a project of the Tides Center, UMEZ Cultural Investment Fund, NYC District 8 City Council Member Diana Ayala, and Puerto Rican Workshop Incorporated.

A special thanks to contributors of the imagery:
