El Sancocho Musical, part of LP21's Cultural Legacy Initiatives, celebrates elders and cultural traditions through interactive performances featuring Bomba, Plena, Jazz, and more. Founded in 2007 to combat underappreciation of Puerto Rico's Bomba and Plena traditions, it partners with cultural organizations to offer affordable, high-caliber music. Sancocho events blend Puerto Rico's musical heritage with contemporary genres, showcasing the versatility of Bomba and Plena while celebrating Caribbean Diaspora culture. Encouraging active participation, they create vibrant, soul-nourishing community atmospheres where audiences inevitably dance and celebrate.
NEW FOR 2024 - LP21'S EL SANCOCHO MUSICAL WORKSHOP WITH BULLA EN EL BARRIO
Unmistakably rooted in Afro-Puerto Rican bomba and plena, LP21’s music is a true “sancocho” (savory stew), incorporating jazz, hip-hop, and related Afro-Caribbean expressions. This special 40th anniversary El Sancocho Musical further embodies and amplifies this spirit of combining complementary sounds and musical spices by inviting sister traditions from Colombian artists Bulla en el Barrio, an all-female troupe and NYC's first Bullerengue group. Workshop participants will learn about the history, the dance, and songs of Colombia Bullerengue and Afro-Puerto Rican Bomba and Plena.

Los Pleneros de la 21 (LP21) is the premier East Harlem-based performing ensemble and non-profit community organization. LP21 was founded in 1983 by Juan J. ‘Juango’ Gutiérrez (National Endowment for the Arts Heritage Fellow, 1996) and the legendary Master Plenero, Marcial Reyes Arvelo. The ensemble has pioneered the road for Bomba and Plena performances around NYC and continues to spread it globally for nearly 40 years.

Bulla en el Barrio was founded by Carolina Oliveros. She was born in the Caribbean city of Barranquilla, Colombia. It’s the port at the mouth of the Magdalena River, Colombia’s great river. Barranquilla is special because the city was built by the people, not the Spanish colonizers.
Bulla en el Barrio is New York’s first bullerengue group. It started in 2014 as a group of women who would sing and dance in Central Park. You can follow them on Instagram at @bulla_en_el_barrio.
